Bond set at $1.3M for man charged in 2 fatal shootings

A judge set bond at $1.3 million Wednesday for a Toledo man charged with aggravated murder in fatal shootings from 2020 and 2022.

Keondre Baker, 19, of the 100 block of 16th Street, entered pleas of not guilty to all charges through appointed lawyer Gretchen DeBacker during his arraignment in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Judge Stacy Cook then mostly accepted recommendations from Michael Bahner, an assistant county prosecutor, to set bond at $100,000 for each of 13 violent-felony charges against Baker related to the June 24, 2020, death of James Smith, Jr., 19, and the Oct. 29, 2022, death of Ronald Thomas.

The judge’s exception from the prosecutor’s request was to set recognizance bonds for single counts of participating in a criminal gang related to both indictments.

Mr. Bahner told the court Wednesday that Baker was one of several people who became involved in a physical fight with Mr. Smith at the Moody Manor Apartments on the day of Mr. Smith’s death. A .40-caliber handgun recovered from that shooting had Baker’s DNA on it, he said.
