Recreation center coming to Vistula District as part of Glass City Riverwalk project

North Toledo’s historic Vistula District could soon be getting an old city warehouse-like building along the Maumee River converted into a family-oriented recreation center as part of the ongoing Glass City Riverwalk project being undertaken by Metroparks Toledo.

Toledo City Council on Wednesday was expected to turn possession of the building over to the park district for such work to begin. The building is a massive one along Water Street, between Lagrange and Elm streets and directly across the river from the Glass City Metropark.

It has for years been occupied by Toledo’s Division of Streets, Bridges & Harbor.

Metroparks Toledo’s Board of Park Commissioners got the ball rolling at its monthly meeting inside the Wildwood Metropark’s Ward Pavilion, hours before Toledo City Council was to meet, by agreeing to amend a contract for professional services in that area with Tetra Tech.

The board agreed with a recommendation from Jennifer Van Horn, Metroparks Toledo’s chief of planning and capital projects, to increase the company’s compensation ceiling to a not-to-exceed amount of $1.73 million, up from $1.39 million, because of the contract amendment.
