Drake sisters bring new wine bar concept to North Toledo

Golden Hind Wine Bar had its grand opening on Thursday, giving Ostrich Towne in the Vistula neighborhood a taste of something new — a wine bar offering sweet and savory pastries, coffee, and tea.

Sister team Beth and Cassie Drake put their heads together as the co-owners of the space — Beth said she always wanted to open a bakery, and Cassie wanted to do something wine related — so the two teamed up to open a place that offered both.

Places such as the British Isles, Scandinavia, and the coasts are experimenting with this type of bar experience, Beth Drake said, but not so much here in the Midwest.

“It’s something really new to the area,” she said. “It is a viable concept. We’re not just out there inventing something from whole cloth. [We’re] jumping the timeline. So instead of the trend hitting us about five years from now, we’re starting it.”

The name of the wine bar comes from the sisters’ last name, Drake, and after their aunt researched the genealogy of their family, they found out they were related to famed 16th century British explorer Sir Francis Drake — giving the family a strong maritime history, since their father served in the U.S. Navy.
