Several local labor unions endorsed state Sen. Paula Hicks-Hudson for Lucas County commissioner during a campaign kickoff Friday at the United Auto Workers Local 12 union hall.
Members of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 2415, UAW Local 12, and Teamsters Local 20 stood behind Ms. Hicks-Hudson as she spoke about what she aims to accomplish if elected.
Ms. Hicks-Hudson faces Anita Lopez in the March 19 Democratic primary. Ms. Lopez was appointed earlier this month as a commissioner after Tina Skeldon Wozniak retired at the end of the year.
The former Toledo mayor said she wants to take what she’s learned while holding her state senate seat in Columbus to use as a Lucas County commissioner.
“Unlike in Columbus, where we are weakest in terms of legislature and getting things done, here in Lucas County, we get the job done,” Ms. Hicks-Hudson said. “I want to come back and be a part of moving our community forward.”
Ms. Hicks-Hudson said she has a long track record of working with political parties on “both sides of the aisle,” fighting to bring more jobs to the city, and standing with others who have fought for better pay and rights as workers.
