To the editor: Library has tools to help children read

At the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, we are glad that helping all kids learn to read is a priority for the State of Ohio.

As our schools, families, and caregivers learn more about the science of reading, your library can be a crucial resource to support every child’s reading journey.

Early literacy has been a focus of Toledo Lucas County Public Library for decades. We are building on our expertise to ensure all of our librarians are well-versed in the science of reading and supporting families with that expertise. We are one year into an intensive two-year staff training schedule focusing on essential skills all kids need to learn to become good readers. The two primary skills are decoding (also called phonics, or sounding words out) and language comprehension.

Navigating this shift can be confusing, but here is how your library can help:

LIBRARY CARDS! Make sure you and your child have library cards! library cards are free for all Ohio residents, and we don’t have fees for late book returns. Get started at toledolibrary.org/card or stop at any location.
