Almost all forms of crime continued to decrease in Toledo toward the end of 2023, leading the city’s mayor to believe it’s “heading in the right direction.”
During a news conference Tuesday, Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Police Chief Mike Troendle reported a continued decline in burglaries, homicides, and other types of crime according to the city’s latest data.
The statistics reported were a comparison between the fourth-quarter statistics of 2023 and 2022 and an overall comparison between the two years.
Homicide had a 30.8 percent drop in 2023 compared to 2022, with 65 incidents in 2022 and 45 in 2023, Mr. Kapszukiewicz said.
Incidents of people shot were down 26.8 percent, with a total of 216 taking place in 2023 as opposed to 295 in 2022.
Robberies fell 21.5 percent, the mayor reported, with 402 last year and 512 in 2022.
Theft from motor vehicles also dropped in 2023, with 1,458 incidents in 2023 and 1,980 in 2022, he said — a decrease of 26.4 percent.
Burglary was down by 11.5 percent in 2023, with 1,403 cases in 2023 and 1,586 in 2022.
