The smell of sawdust filled the hallway as students at Start High School sanded wood to support a local nonprofit.
Students in the Residential Remodeling and Repair program were measuring and drilling holes Wednesday as they prepared children’s beds for local nonprofit Let’s Build Beds.
The high school woodworkers, working carefully and instructed by teacher Darrell Reeves, would eventually assemble 60 bed kits — including headboards and rails — for families and children to assemble later.
“What happens is they take the rails and the headboards out to the houses, and they teach the kids how to use tools to put the beds together,” Mr. Reeves said.
Students like junior Antwaun Gibson, 16, held boards in place while others, such as junior Zaniah Hamilton, 16, sanded or marked measurements.
Antwaun has taken the class since his freshman year, he said, but had been learning how to woodwork for years before that.
Zaniah said it was her first year taking the class and was excited to help others through it.
