Future bright for Sunshine Communities, celebrating 75 years

Sunshine Communities in Maumee has grown from serving five children in a simple home to helping 250 people of all ages with developmental disabilities daily.

It started with a promise and is continuing with so much progress, said Sunshine leaders, who gave a tour of the sprawling 25-acre Maumee Western Road campus, ahead of this week’s announcement about 75th anniversary celebration events.

There will also be news about Georgette’s Grounds and Gifts, the organization’s downtown coffee shop staffed and operated by individuals with developmental disabilities.

From Promise to Progress is the theme of the 75th anniversary year of Sunshine Communities, which offers residential, vocational, clinical, therapeutic, and recreational services.

Plans for 2024 include building or owning more residential space, and starting new programming, said CEO Jason Abodeely.

“This is kind of like a rebirth after 75 years,” he said.
