Religious Offerings: 150-year celebrations begin at St. Petri

St. Petri Lutheran Church kicks off a year of celebrations for its 150th anniversary on Feb. 11.

Fifty-one charter members came together on Feb. 11, 1874, to form the congregation, which held services in German until 1947.

The Rev. Karl Markscheffel led the first religious service at the first church at Nebraska Avenue and Hawley Street in April, 1874. The congregation grew and a new building was dedicated in 1883 at the same location. Construction of the current church began at a new location on South Byrne Road in December, 1956, and the new church was dedicated in January, 1966.

St. Petri will offer a special service at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 11 at 3120 S. Byrne Rd., Toledo. Later celebrations this year will include a cookout, visiting former pastors of the church, a reunion for past and current members, and a dedicated memorabilia room with items from the church’s history.
