Half of a row of grain elevators that has towered above part of Conant Street in Maumee for generations is slated for demolition.
The Andersons Inc. said in a statement dated Friday it is “in the planning stages of removing a portion of the grain silos” from its elevator complex at 1283 Conant.
The silos involved were built in 1940 and have been leased by The Andersons for the past 25 years.
“While these silos have been part of the Maumee skyline for decades, they have exceeded the lifespan,” the company wrote.
Cargill Inc., which owns the complex, has authorized the demolition, said Cheryl Vion-Hasenaur, director of corporate communications for The Andersons.
The statement did not identify which of several structures are involved, but Patrick Burtch, Maumee’s city administrator, said Monday that the taller, more easterly of two elevator structures is the one to be torn down, along with a grain tank connected to it by a conveyor.
The Andersons has retained L.J. Irving, Jr., and Sons Inc. of Napoleon as its demolition contractor.
