‘Nobody knows’: Jeep workers wonder if they will be reassigned to Detroit or laid off

Hundreds of Toledo Jeep workers remained uneasy about their futures this week — including whether they will be reassigned to other Stellantis facilities in Detroit, or possibly laid off.

A potential Jeep plant layoff of up to 1,225 workers that Stellantis warned about two months ago — and said could start as early as this week — hadn’t materialized as of Thursday. A Stellantis spokesman didn’t respond to a request for an update on the company’s plans.

The December layoff notice stated the cuts would primarily affect about 1,100 supplemental Jeep workers , who help fill scheduling gaps at the plant and earn less than their full-time colleagues.

Instead of being laid off permanently, it appears 900 of those Jeep supplemental workers will soon get good news that they will be rolled over to become full-timers, which would grant them higher wages, more consistent hours, and improved benefits and job security.

The United Auto Workers had negotiated those conversions to full-time with the company during contract negotiations last fall. It was supposed to occur within 90 days of the contract’s ratification — a deadline which falls late next week.
