A South Toledo woman pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to a reduced charge for a homicide nearly two years ago and was immediately sentenced to at least 19 years in state prison.
Tyrefa Hill, 29, of the 500 block of Prouty Avenue, entered the plea to first-degree involuntary manslaughter in Lucas County Common Pleas Court as jury selection was about to begin for her trial on a murder charge.
Authorities said at the time of the April 25, 2022, shooting that Hill and victim Derrick Kimball, 39, had a past relationship. He was shot along Havre Street near Walbridge early that evening. Hill then turned herself in at the Safety Building.
The sentence Judge Linda Jennings handed down after accepting Hill’s plea Tuesday morning included 11 to 16½ years for the involuntary manslaughter conviction, to be served consecutive to and following a three-year term for a firearm specification and five years for shooting from a motor vehicle.
Hill received credit for 660 days’ time served. Whether her total incarceration exceeds 19 years will be up to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, which has authority to add up to 5½ years to the base sentence if Hill misbehaves in prison.
