Thunderstorms, downbursts result in at least $8,000 worth of damage to Palmyra cemetery

PALMYRA TWP. — Some quick, yet damaging storms have moved through the area over the last week-and-a-half.

And while during this stretch of time residents countywide have been combatting a multi-day heat event, a specific area of Palmyra Township continues to pick up the pieces after a quick storm rolled through on the evening of June 17.

A severe thunderstorm warning for Lenawee County more than one week ago resulted in power outages and some downed tree branches. Palmyra Township, meanwhile, is looking at the potential for $8,000-$9,000 worth of damage when three trees were brought down by the June 17 storms at the township’s Main Cemetery along U.S. 223.

After assessing and investigating the damage left behind, Palmyra Township Supervisor Dave Pixley said it was determined anything broken or dislodged at the cemetery was caused by the downed trees.

“It shows what the power of storms can do,” Pixley said. “These trees coming down broke a concrete lid into three pieces.

“…We have a lot of damage to vaults. Some lids were pulled up by a tree stump and broke it into three pieces. We have another (vault) that was disrupted but wasn’t damaged. It was moved.”
