Man pleads guilty to manslaughter in Side Cut Metropark death

A Maumee man pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree involuntary manslaughter for the death last fall of a 76-year-old man he struck during an altercation in Side Cut Metropark.

Zachary Boyer, 34, faces up to 11 to 16½ years in prison when Judge Gary Cook sentences him in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on Aug. 5.

John Meeker, 76, died Nov. 15 in the University of Toledo Medical Center, 11 days after the incident involving Boyer near the park’s Silver Lake in which Mr. Meeker suffered serious head injuries.

Initially charged with reckless homicide, Boyer was indicted Jan. 23 for murder, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless homicide, representing alternative theories of the case. Counts of felonious assault and aggravated assault also were alternatives to each other.

The assault charges and the murder and reckless homicide counts all are to be dismissed at sentencing.
