Human remains found in garage after explosion, fire near Michigan-Ohio border

LAMBERTVILLE (WWJ) — An investigation is ongoing after human remains were found in the aftermath of a garage fire near the Michigan-Ohio border.

Firefighters and Monroe County sheriff’s deputies were called to a home on Case Drive in Lambertville — a couple miles north of the state line — Monday morning after getting numerous 911 calls reporting that a structure in the area had “blown up.”

Responding deputies found a detached garage on fire “with damage consistent from an explosion,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

The deputies immediately checked nearby structures for any people and warned them of the fire.

Bedford Township and Whiteford Township fire crews were able to extinguish the fire. Then, during a search of the garage, crews found human remains inside a car that was parked in the garage.

Authorities have not determined what caused the apparent explosion.

The human remains were taken to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office in Ohio for an autopsy. Officials did not say whether the victim had been identified.
