“I’m here to say that it worked.”
So said ProMedica President and CEO Arturo Polizzi, referring to the plan he devised and executed that put the company’s financial woes largely behind it.
Although fixing ProMedica’s balance sheet is his premier accomplishment in his first two years as the company’s top leader, Mr. Polizzi is also dealing with a host of other issues, including the changing scale and tenor of the company’s philanthropic efforts, the status of the vacant Jefferson Center near downtown Toledo, the challenges of deploying the company’s medical assets over a large geographic area, and the growing role of artificial intelligence in medical care.
But in Mr. Polizzi’s mind, those other issues had to take a back seat to dealing with the huge losses ProMedica suffered in the wake of its acquisition (together with Welltower) of the HCR ManorCare nursing home chain.
Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz credits Mr. Polizzi’s even-keeled demeanor with pulling ProMedica through the perilous times.
