A busy South End intersection that has been closed for reconstruction since early October is slated to reopen Saturday.
Two-way traffic is slated to resume on South Avenue through its intersection with Broadway Street, while Broadway will reopen southbound only through that area.
The intersection’s reconstruction has been part of a broader city project to rebuild Broadway between Danny Thomas Park and Western Avenue, including reducing its through lanes from two to one each way and other safety work intended to make the street friendlier for cyclists and pedestrians.
The work was preceded by replacement of the water main beneath Broadway south of South Avenue. Its overall completion had been scheduled for late this year, but that was thwarted by breaks in the water main near Western, after which city officials determined that piece of the pipe also needed replacement.
That means Broadway will remain one-way between South and Western until next summer, but the city’s contractor expects to reopen Broadway south of South to two-way traffic before winter, along with all side-street intersections.
