Maumee officials search for source of fuel spill into river

A fuel spill into the Maumee River from a storm pipe kept Maumee officials busy over the weekend.

“The City of Maumee is actively responding to a fuel spill from the storm pipe near the White Street Parking Lot. Emergency response crews were dispatched immediately,” the city wrote in a social media post Saturday afternoon.

By Sunday evening, while the spill was contained, its source remained a mystery, said Nancy Gagnet, public information officer for the city.

Ms. Gagnet said sewer workers first noticed the spill about 4:30 p.m. Friday. They, along with city engineers and other staff, worked with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Coast Guard, and Northwest Ohio Environmental Services to determine the origin and response.

“They had the boom out there and all of the agencies responding,” she said of crews that worked Friday night and all day Saturday. “It was a matter of finding out the source.”

The city is still monitoring the site to determine the exact type and source of the discharge that left a very strong odor in the air.
