Man pleads not guilty to Oct. 22 beating death

A central Toledo man charged with another man’s beating death pleaded not guilty Monday morning in Lucas County Common Pleas Court after a judge approved the appointment of two defense lawyers.

Ronnie Kanavel, of the 800 block of Norwood Avenue, was indicted Oct. 31 for alternative counts of aggravated murder and murder, felonious assault, and aggravated burglary relating to the Oct. 22 beating death of Curtis Marshall, 57. Police responding to a home in the 200 block of Licking Street about 11 p.m. found Mr. Marshall unresponsive and he died at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center.

Following Mr. Kanavel’s arraignment with lawyers Lawrence and Samuel Gold, Judge Dean Mandros continued the $1 million bond that had been set in Toledo Municipal Court after his arrest. Also charged in the case, in Lucas County Juvenile Court, is Malachy Turner, 15.
