Toledo zoning and planning committee rejects proposed Sheetz gas station

A proposed Sheetz gas station and convenience store on Bernath Parkway and Airport Highway is headed to Toledo City Council with a recommendation of disapproval from the council’s zoning and planning committee.

At a committee meeting Tuesday, more than 30 individuals filled the seats of council chambers, with about 11 people speaking against the proposed development and two people speaking in support of the project.

The city of Toledo Plan Commission recommended the project for approval with a vote of 3-1, after the initial vote was tied at 2-2. Member Emory Whittington III changed his vote but did not explain why at the meeting. He did not return a message for comment Tuesday.

The outpour of public comment followed a discussion of the zoning and planning committee, in which a majority of the council members on the committee spoke against the development in its proposed location.

“I think what we’re talking about here is maybe the location as opposed to, is Sheetz a good company?” Councilman Theresa Morris, the chair of the zoning and planning committee, said of the opposition.
