Toledo employees at the scrap metal recycler OmniSource are leaving the local Teamsters union, which has represented them for more than a decade.
In November, the National Labor Relations Board certified 86 ballots, with 43 votes in favor of staying with the Toledo-based Teamsters Local 20, and 43 votes against staying with the union.
Because the votes for the labor union did not reach a majority, the employees will seemingly cut ties with the union.
The election was held on Oct. 1, which was followed by two objections by Local 20 and two petitions for declaratory order by OmniSource.
On Dec. 5, the NLRB regional director tossed the objections and certified the workers’ votes. Local 20 has until Thursday to file a Request for Review on the director’s decision.
Representatives for Local 20 and the attorney representing the union did not respond to requests for comment asking if they planned to file a request for review.
The effort to leave the union, led by Toledo OmniSource employee Daniel Caughhorn, was fueled by long-term dissatisfaction with the union officials. Mr. Caughhorn declined a request for an interview, instead replying through a spokesman with a statement outlining his frustrations.
