Area highways, bridge named in honor of fallen military

COLUMBUS — A stretch of State Route 199 in Wood County will be named the U.S. Army Pvt. 1st Class Jerry Bockbrader Memorial Highway under a bill signed into law Thursday by Gov. Mike DeWine.

The stretch between West South Boundary Street and State Rt. 105 will be named in honor of the Perrysburg man, who was killed May 20, 1968, in Thua Thien Hue Province, South Vietnam. Mr. Bockbrader, at the age of 20, was killed by an enemy grenade while investigating a suspicious person.

Family members were on hand for a bill-signing photograph with the governor.

State Rep. Haraz Ghanbari (R., Perrysburg) introduced a separate bill that was ultimately rolled into House Bill 81 during the lame-duck session. That occurred with many other separate namings. Others in northwest Ohio include:

● The Ottawa County Veterans Memorial Highway, State Rt. 163 between Fostoria Road and Hartshorn Road.

● The Gold and Blue Star Family Memorial Bridge, carrying State Rt. 107 over the St. Joseph River in Montpelier, Williams County.
