The city of Oregon is planning to hire a traffic design firm to identify which intersections would benefit from the construction of roundabouts.
“I think they are incredibly useful in the right circumstances,” Joel Mazur, city administrator, said of the circular intersections that move traffic in one direction around a center island. “We have several intersections in Oregon where they could go in. I think any of the Wynn Road intersections could use a roundabout.”
Of particular interest are intersections with two-way stops, Mr. Mazur said.
“A lot of our intersections have four-way stops, which are great. It’s the intersections where we just have two-way stops, like Wynn and Pickle roads. We don’t have very many accidents, but we’re hearing a lot about near misses. So those intersections are where roundabouts would work extremely well,” he said.
A study of those intersections would be unable to quantify “near misses,” so the administration will have to rely on public feedback, he said.
