Just weeks ago, Paul Causman took his bows after another excellent performance as Ebenezer Scrooge — his 22nd — at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol .

Entering its 4th decade in 2025, Toledo’s storied adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novella capped off a year of quality local entertainment — and a regional tragedy that reverberated nationwide.

On Sept. 30, Findlay hometown hero Gavin Creel passed away just three months after being diagnosed with a rare connective tissue cancer.

Rising to prominence for roles in Thoroughly Modern Millie , Hair , and The Book of Mormon . Creel won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his performance in 2017’s revival of Hello, Dolly . Creel was beloved in Findlay and his alma mater, the University of Michigan, for encouraging the Ohio students who saw him as an inspiration.

“People talk a lot about how you shouldn’t meet your heroes because they might disappoint you. It’s the exact opposite with Gavin Creel. To meet him is to fall in love with him and to bask in his light and be inspired by him,” Findlay City Schools’ David Coolidge told The Blade earlier this year .
