Sandusky County EMS Chief discusses plans for new Gibsonburg Life Squad Station

GIBSONBURG – Construction has started on the site for the new Sandusky County EMS Station 14 in Gibsonburg.

The first Life Squad Station in Sandusky County was built in 1975 and sits next to White Star Park, sharing the same building as the Sandusky County Park District Operations Center and the Sandusky County Sheriff Substation.

The county commissioners approved $4.49 million for the new building on Dec. 19, next to the current Life Squad 14 facility at 833 S. Main St. in Gibsonburg. Trees have already been cut down as the first step in site preparation.

The current facility has one ambulance bay, which Chief Jeff Jackson estimates to have less then 100 square feet of room between the walls and the sides of their ambulance. Loading the ambulance with equipment requires parking the unit in the driveway.

The office is a single desk and two beds, with less than 900 square feet.

Preliminary plans have the new facility at about five times that size, 4,500 square feet. It will include a state-mandated storm shelter, a back-up generator, and two ambulance bays.
