Outdoors: Fishermen still out on the ice, but walleye run anticipated soon

With the weather outside frigid, a fishing enthusiast wouldn’t necessarily be thinking the walleye run just yet unless you’re Mario Campos, the proprietor of Maumee Tackle — Fishing, Kayak, and Shooting Outfitters.

He posted Feb. 6 on Maumee Tackle’s Facebook page with a short update on the recent conditions of the Maumee River along Side Cut Park, which showed open water.

“That’s Blue Grass Island and that’s Buttonwood [pointing to each behind him in video] … open water … however, but once the ice breaks loose above the dam in Grand Rapids, we’ll get all the ice jams come down and bog up the river for a day or two,” he explained. “But, hey, look at this — I didn’t bring my thermometer to see what the water temperature is, but it’s warming up with the little bit of rain and warm weather we got. It bodes well for the walleye run.” He said in a previous column once the water in the Maumee River is in the low to mid-40s it triggers the spawning instinct in walleyes…
