Organ transplant recipient dies from rabies

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A Michigan resident who received an organ transplant at the University of Toledo Medical Center in late 2024 died from rabies in January 2025.

Officials with UToledo Health said person-to-person transmission of rabies is extremely rare, though it has been documented in a very small number of cases involving organ transplants.

In a statement, UToledo Health said it is committed to the safety and well-being of all its patients. It also said, “The health system has worked closely with public health authorities and has conducted a thorough review of this case, which found all best practices and standard safety protocols were appropriately followed.”…
