The Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 28, which would “eliminate the authority to levy replacement property tax levies,” on March 19, moving it to the Ohio Senate.
Described as a continuation of a previous bill sponsored by Rep. Adam Mathews, R-Lebanon, the bill is meant to “create transparency” for voters when it comes to tax levies, Mathews told the Cleveland Jewish News.
“The ultimate goal of the bill is to make sure that if voters go to the ballot box, they know whether or not they are voting to raise their property taxes,” Mathews said. “Our local taxing entities, whether it’s schools or parks or libraries, often do a very good job of explaining to their voters what their needs are. However, we want to make sure that voters know, ‘Does a yes vote mean I am paying the same as I’ve been paying before or will my taxes go up?’”…
