Proposed ordinance would require new regulations for schools in Toledo

One Toledo City Councilman wants to ensure that all schools in the city are held to the same zoning standards, but others are pushing back on a new proposed ordinance.

Councilman Nick Komives is proposing an ordinance that would add requirements to the Toledo Municipal Code for future educational facilities. It would require schools, new or undergoing redevelopment, to do a site plan review and traffic study, and hold schools to standards regarding location, setbacks, landscaping, lot size, drop-off and pick-up areas, parking, spacing, and fencing.

Mr. Komives’ proposed ordinance would also add public and private preschool programs licensed by the Ohio Department of Education to the definition of schools in the city’s zoning code. If the ordinance passes, facilities that educate students in programs from birth to age 5 that are not in kindergarten, would have to adhere to the zoning regulations. Mr. Komives declined to comment for this story…
