ROME — An Ottawa Hills graduate stood in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday and saw Pope Francis in what would turn out to be his final hours.
“It was up in the air whether or not the pope would speak because of his health,” said Meredith Greeley, who attended Mass in Vatican City the morning before the pontiff died.
“At the very end of Mass [around noon] he came out onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica,” she said. “Everybody was in high spirits, but the pope did not seem very healthy. He said his thing, but it was a little hard for him to get it out. He just said a couple words and raised his hand and waved to everybody.”…
