Murder trial opens for man charged with fatal West Toledo shooting

Murder defendant Sean Duhart was visibly afraid of a man who followed him into a West Toledo carryout and then stole his mother’s red Hyundai Sonata as he hid inside the store, a store clerk said during the first day of testimony in Mr. Duhart’s trial Friday.

Less than an hour later, a different man who was driving the stolen Hyundai north on Hoiles Avenue was killed in a hail of bullets from a silver Chevrolet Malibu that had chased it toward Sylvania Avenue, videos gathered by police and presented in Lucas County Common Pleas Court showed.

Early witnesses in Mr. Duhart’s trial for the death of Michael Bradford-Washington placed both Mr. Duhart and Mr. Bradford-Washington in the presence of convicted car thief Jalen Smith on the early afternoon of Feb. 11, 2024. But no evidence or testimony Friday placed Mr. Duhart in the silver Chevrolet Malibu that numerous surveillance cameras showed traveling toward the shooting scene beforehand and elsewhere in Toledo afterward…
