To the editor: More trees will benefit all of us

I commend the city of Toledo for its efforts to plant nearly 11,000 trees through the RE-Tree program. Trees do a great deal for us, and they are a key part of tackling climate change. Trees provide beauty and shade. They help prevent heat islands in urban areas. They remove carbon from the atmosphere, and they improve air quality. They also absorb rainwater, helping to prevent flooding during heavy storms.

At a time when many feel hopeless about making progress on environmental concerns, the RE-Tree program is a solid step forward that will pay dividends to Toledo for years to come. I wish it every success.
