At sentencing, man says girlfriend’s fatal shooting was accident

A man convicted of killing his girlfriend in her bedroom last year told a courtroom before his sentencing Monday that he had pulled the trigger by accident.

But Judge Gary Cook said in Lucas County Common Pleas Court that whether Robert Shields III shot Jaylah Perry accidentally or not, the case had “a deplorable set of facts” and Shields’ behavior was “absolutely reckless.”

The judge then sentenced Shields, now 19, of the 500 block of Clark Street, to an agreed-upon 25 years in prison, with about a year of credit for time already served…
