Lucas County Commissioner Gerken reverses vote on Flock camera contract at Tuesday’s meeting

TOLEDO, Ohio — Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken reversed his vote Tuesday on a proposed agreement between the sheriff’s office and Flock Safety, a private company that provides license plate reader technology.

The agreement, originally approved July 15 that would have allowed the sheriff’s office to deploy Flock cameras countywide. Gerken said he reconsidered the decision after reflecting on the implications of mass surveillance and data privacy.

“Mass surveillance is a technique that the federal government and state government are using to look at our citizens who have committed no crimes,” Gerken said. “We lose control of this data that goes to a for-profit private company.”…
