A nod to Toledo’s ‘Frogtown’: Local artist to unveil completed ‘Toledo Mural’ on Thursday

TOLEDO, Ohio — “Toledo and frogs,” — that’s how local artist Dean Davis described the next installment in his “River Gallery Project” back in April. Flash forward to July, this installment, formally titled “The Toledo Mural,” is complete.

In April, Davis shared details about his ambitious River Gallery Project. The project’s goal is to create Toledo’s riverfront into a canvas, exhibiting the city’s culture and history through 23 murals. When the 23 murals are complete, Davis said this project could be one of the “largest public art installations on a riverfront in the world.”

“The Toledo Mural” was one of the first murals in the project’s lineup. Displayed on a parking garage exterior on the corner of Madison Avenue and North St. Clair Street, the mural celebrates one of Toledo’s nicknames, Frogtown. This nickname originates from Toledo’s history with the Great Black Swamp.

According to a press release, Davis finished The Toledo Mural in two weeks. With its full completion, ConnecToledo is inviting the Toledo community to join the bright froggy mural’s unveiling celebration at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday at Levis Square Park.
