Wireless emergency alerts to begin opt-in monthly testing in Lucas County

Lucas County will begin testing its wireless emergency alerts the first Friday of each month at noon alongside its regular tests of outdoor warning sirens.

Starting Friday, the test alerts will be delivered to cell phones through the same system that delivers AMBER Alerts. Residents must opt in to receive the tests, but those who do not will continue to receive emergency alerts issued for severe weather, hazardous materials, and evacuations.

To receive the test alerts, users must activate the toggle in the settings, which vary by device. The options are generally available for iPhones at the bottom of Apple’s notification settings and for Android devices by searching “emergency alerts.” Some devices may refer to the settings as “government alerts” or “public local alerts.”…
