Boy sentenced to 25 years for fellow teenager’s shooting death

Had he not bragged on the streets about having shot the wrong kid, Calub Ellis’ killer might never have been caught, the boy’s mother said Thursday afternoon in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Dominique Ellis said she took some solace in the fact that Leveire Barnes, who a judge sentenced to 25 to 30½ years in prison for Calub Ellis’ Sept. 18, 2023 shooting death, was caught at all, when so many similar cases go unsolved.

But his death consumed the savings she said she had stashed away for Calub’s first car, or tuition at “a fancy high school,” or maybe his wedding. And at her workplace, Ms. Ellis said she “can look out the window where my son took his last breath.”…
