A natural predator could help control the spotted lanternfly population in our region

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – It’s an invasive insect that can be spotted all over our region. And sightings continue to increase. We’re talking about the spotted lanternfly. But research shows there’s a new weapon in the war against the pesky creatures.

The spotted lanternfly is native to Asia. It was first found in the United States in Pennsylvania about a decade ago. They’re a hitchhiker of sorts, so they continue to spread by catching rides on things like trains, cars and clothing.

They first landed in the Toledo area a few years ago and they’ve made themselves right at home. But research shows there’s a predator that has a taste for the pesky insects…
