Nuances of tradition: Domestic Lines, Quiet Rituals at the Toledo Museum of Art

The table’s sides curved inwards and allowed the stools to come closer to the center, towards a fragile bowl braided with fibers, filled with pieces of rope. The design was intended to bring individuals inward and replicate the sensation of sitting at a card table, said the artist behind the piece, Amy Beeler.

Her exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Community Gallery explores the nuances of domestic life and traditions, through artistic works composed of cotton clothesline. The fiber material is used by Beeler to create sculptural forms, including flowers and kitchen objects, alongside other forms.

“She uses cotton clothesline as her main material, and this is transforming a symbol of household labor into like a beautiful sculpture that evokes memory and loss and just all these sensory experiences that really makes her art stand out,” said Jennifer Cantley, TMA Community Gallery and advisory manager…
