TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Work to re-establish an ancient species of fish in local waters is showing some promising results. An effort was started in 2018 to reintroduce Lake Sturgeon to the Maumee River as well as Lake Erie and early research results are pointing in the right direction.
The Maumee River was a critical spawning ground for lake sturgeon for centuries and they were once abundant in the river. But experts say a number of factors eventually led to the sturgeon’s near extinction, so the encouraging early research about the effort to restore a self-sufficient population is critical on a number of levels. Dr. Bill Hintz is an associate professor at the University of Toledo.
