Historic documents discovered in attic of downtown Toledo building; grant awarded for preservation, archival process

TOLEDO, Ohio — Historic, hand-drawn documents discovered in the attic of the Toledo Police Safety Building will be preserved with the help of a grant and the library’s expertise, the city of Toledo said in a press release Tuesday.

The documents are plat maps, the city said. Drawn by hand, they number approximately 660 pages on 10 cubic feet of linen. The maps were created in the 1880s and give insight into the city of Toledo’s early urban landscape. Upon their discovery, Clerk of Council Julie Gibbons identified them as historically significant, the city said.

According to the press release, the Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board awarded the city of Toledo with a $2,480 grant to preserve the maps. Funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission will also assist the city in preserving the maps, a project that is expected to run through Dec. 31, 2025…
