TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo man acquitted in a homicide case three years ago is once again facing criminal charges — this time over a firearm found during a traffic stop.
Vontae Garrett, an Army veteran and former Indiana special deputy, was cleared in 2022 after shooting and killing a man outside a Toledo bar. Jurors determined he acted in self-defense.
Garrett says he was recently driving home to Indiana after visiting family in Toledo when he saw police lights in his rearview mirror. A Lucas County sheriff’s deputy pulled him over, telling him the car might have been stolen and the plates didn’t match.
