Toledo reaches deal to pay family after EMS refused hospital transport for seizure patient who later died

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The City of Toledo has agreed to pay a family thousands as part of a settlement after EMS crews didn’t take their son to the hospital after he felt a seizure coming on. He later died.

City council documentation shows the city will pay $300,000 to the family of 26-year-old Travon Weaver. His mother, Serena Allen, filed a lawsuit against Toledo Fire and Rescue, alleging Weaver died as a result of the actions taken by paramedics back in January 2023.

The settlement is the latest development in a story the 13 Action News I-TEAM first told you about in a special report last year. Allen told 13 Action News that she called 9-1-1 when her son, who had epilepsy and diabetes, thought he was having a seizure. Crews responded in a timely manner, but they didn’t leave with the patient…
