Latest U.S. Drought Monitor: Dryness expands in the Midwest as extreme conditions persist out West

TOLEDO, Ohio — The latest U.S. Drought Monitor, released on Thursday, Sept. 18, shows drought conditions stretching across much of the United States. While the severity varies from region to region, the impacts are being felt in agriculture, water resources, and wildfire management.

The Great Lakes

In Ohio, moderate drought has expanded into the northwest and central parts of the state, including the Toledo area. Farmers report that late-season corn and soybeans are showing stress, while lawns and gardens are turning brown without supplemental watering. Neighboring Michigan and Indiana also have scattered areas of dryness, though widespread severe drought has been avoided thanks to recent rainfall.
