State grant shortens Lucas County’s time to pretreat roads in winter

The recent state-funded addition of a fourth brine-applicator tank to its fleet will allow the Lucas County Engineer’s Office to pretreat the entire county road network within 24 hours before a winter storm.

“With all roadways pretreated, this will create more favorable conditions for snow to be mechanically removed before it can create slippery conditions and significantly reduce the use of road salts on county roads,” the agency said in announcing the acquisition

And reducing use of rock salt to curb salt intrusion into the Lake Erie watershed and other Ohio waterways is the goal of the H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grant Program, which provided a grant the county used to buy the $28,300 brine applicator for itself as well as a $16,500 one for the village of Holland…
