More than two years after conviction, former Toledo councilman has yet to serve any of four-month sentence

TOLEDO, Ohio — 11 Investigates has learned that Gary Johnson, a former Toledo city council member, convicted in an FBI corruption investigation that began in 2018, has yet to serve a day of his four-month sentence, despite being convicted more than 27 months ago.

Three former council members — Yvonne Harper, Tyrone Riley and Larry Sykes — pleaded guilty in the case and have each served their sentences.

Johnson has appealed his case to the Sixth District and the appeal appears to be on hold, pending a U.S. Supreme Court decision in Sittenfeld v. United States of America. Alexander Sittenfeld was a Cincinnati mayoral candidate who was convicted of accepting campaign donations that the jury believed were bribes in exchange for favorable votes in the future…
