Judge sets deadline for potential insanity defense in case of father accused of killing 13-year-old daughter

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Lucas County judge has given the defense team representing a Toledo man accused of raping and murdering his 13-year-old daughter just over three weeks to declare whether they plan to argue that he was legally insane, intellectually disabled or otherwise mentally impaired at the time of the alleged crimes.

In a court order filed Oct. 7, Judge Michael Goulding set Oct. 30 as the deadline for attorneys representing Darnell Jones to formally notify the court if they intend to pursue an insanity defense or raise any claim of serious mental illness, intellectual disability or related condition.

If the defense does not file such a notice by that date, it will be barred from raising those defenses later, according to the order…
