Toledo’s Jamaican community braces as Hurricane Melissa looms

TOLEDO, Ohio — Regardless of the fact that it’s almost 2,000 miles away, Hurricane Melissa is having a direct impact on Toledo’s Jamaican community.

WTOL 11 checked in with Jamaican Spice restaurant in west Toledo to see how they’re faring with the Category 5 storm closing in on parts of their home.

Chef Ricardo Miller and many others in the family restaurant business have migrated from Jamaica to Toledo, but still own property and are well connected in Jamaica. They said last year, Hurricane Beryl left many areas without electricity for months, and their concern is even higher for Hurricane Melissa because the current storm is stronger and slower…
