‘We’re still one nation’: Toledo’s Jamaican restaurants lead effort to help storm survivors

TOLEDO, Ohio — As Hurricane Melissa weakens, it leaves behind a trail of destruction in the Caribbean. Here in Toledo, that impact is being felt from the Jamaican community.

“From back home, we have been hearing ‘devastating,’ ‘terrible’ — those are the adjectives that they use to describe what’s happening there,” George Cross said.

The hurricane resulted in winds ripping off roofs, water flooding the streets and hundreds of thousands of people without power. Hurricane Melissa is also to blame for more than 50 deaths in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica…
