Lucas County Children Services looking to help feed kids despite uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits

TOLEDO, Ohio — With uncertainty surrounding federal SNAP benefits amid the ongoing government funding standoff, local agencies in Lucas County are preparing for a surge in hunger and hardship among families who rely on food assistance.

According to Kevin Milliken, the public information officer with Lucas County Children Services (LCCS), food insecurity has already begun to increase as pantries and social service agencies see longer lines and heavier demand, even before any changes to SNAP have taken effect.

“Everyone is looking for a light switch in the dark to solve what is an ever-evolving problem,” Milliken said. “We don’t know how long a shutdown might last, but we do know families are struggling right now.”…
